Personal Story: Ewan's story (February 2012)

We would like to share our success story regarding our son Ewan Jad Muir. Ewan was born with a heart murmur.  After investigation he was diagnosed with pulmonary stenosis and ventricular septal defect.  It was the most stressful time in our life. After delivering two healthy boys we were shocked and very stressed to find that we had a baby with heart disease. No matter how supportive hospital staff were we thought our life had ended. We soon found ourselves in this alarming high-tech medical world which we didn't understand.

Ewan will be 10 next week and we can't believe how far he has come. The first 5 years of his life was particularly difficult for our whole family. Ewan did not take part in physical exercise at school, not because he didn't want to but because he couldn't.  He would sit on the side line watching all his class mates having lots of fun. Ewan had heart surgery just before his 6th birthday and life changed for him and for us as a family. After surgery Ewan took part in every sport possible; he joined the school running team, the local badminton club, tennis club and he took up swimming. He still struggles to keep up with some of his peers although his determination and commitment to everything he does is an inspiration to everybody he meets.

Ewan won the boys 9 and under boys swimming championships last year and has been selected to compete in the West District mini league. He may need further surgery when he is fully grown, we try not to think about it to much and just enjoy everything he has achieved, he has come along way from the wee boy who couldn't even take part in his first year sport day.

The photographs are of Ewan with some of his trophies and medals and with his older brother Marc poolside.
