Over The Wall Children's Charity
7 February, 2016

OVER THE WALL CHILDREN'S CHARITY

OVER THE WALL is a national children's charity founded in 1999. Their purpose is to create fun opportunities for children and their families to reach beyond serious illness and discover joy, confidence and a new world of possibilities, always FREE of charge. They do this by providing residential activity camps, which last 3-6 days and are intentionally designed to create positive, life changing experiences. Every year they recruit for campers, camp volunteers and medical volunteers.

Evo Monitors Purchased
13 October, 2015

EVO Cardiac Recorders.

The new EVO monitors which are currently in use at the children's hospital are used on a daily basis. The unit, in comparison to others available, is much lighter and smaller.
It bears a strong resemblance to an Ipod, and is more accepted by the children on this basis. It is also easier to conceal which is a big deal to the teenage patients, who are never too pleased to have one in the first place.
In terms of cost it is nearly half the price of the Lifecard monitors which we are also still using. An EVO monitor is approximately £900 per unit, and the Lifecard around £1800.
The EVO, unlike the Lifecard is a rechargeable unit and therefore needs no batteries.
Where these two types of monitor are different, is in the length of time that they can record for and hence the reason for the need for both.
The EVO monitor can only record for a maximum of 48 hours, which accommodates the majority of our patients.
The Lifecard monitor records for up to 7 days which is useful to patients whose symptoms are not daily.
ALL the cardiac monitors we are using at present have been purchased and donated by SACHD and without your input this service would be a waiting list based service. At present we have no waiting list for these monitors and children are, if needed, fitted with one on the day they attend their appointments.
Thank you all very much.

Pitmedden - Millport Cycle
30 May, 2015

CHARITY CYCLE EVENT
Pitmedden folk get on their bikes for charity.
A group of 8 dad's and 1 Mum in Pitmedden, Aberdeenshire are getting on their bikes to raise some money for children's charity SACHD (the Scottish Association for Children with Heart Disorders) in a coast to coast cycle event.
The team consisting of Stephen Booth, Andrew Noble, Mark Kettle, Stuart Wood, Stuart Clark, Mike Paterson, Jennifer Noble, Steve Baguley and Richard Leece are cycling from Pitmedden Primary School to Millport in the West coast of Scotland on 3rd, 4th and 5th June, leaving from the Primary School with a send off from the pupils at 9am on 3rd June. Their arrival in Millport will allow the cyclists and their families to join up with the annual SACHD family event cycling around the island of Millport on 6th June.
Not wishing to take the easy way, the route will take the team over the highest classified road in Britain at Glenshee, take 3 days in total, cover approx. 240 miles and involve close to 16,000 feet of climbing!
Other locations covered on route include, Ballater, Braemar, Pitlochry, Killen, Callander, Balloch and the Erskine Bridge before heading to Largs, and then catching the ferry to Millport on the Saturday morning.
Only a couple of the team have previously embarked on any cycle touring before, so it's a new challenge for the team of MAMMILs (middle aged men 'and a mum' in Lycra) who have been training for the event since the turn of the year.
Stephen is a trustee of the charity SACHD, having become involved with the association when his daughter Jennifer (now almost 10) was diagnosed with the heart condition before she was born.
The team have already raised over £5,000 and would like to offer huge thanks for all the donations from family friends, friends, local businesses and colleagues. Everyone's support will most certainly give them some "pedal power" to achieve this cycling endurance. Further donations can be made at:
www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/pitmeddencyclers
A special thanks to Ken Malcolm Equipment Ltd in Newmacher who have sponsored team cycling tops.

Lands End - John O'Groats Cycle Event
21 May, 2015

On the 4th September 2015 Arthur Forster, Dave Marshall and I (Robbie Hendry) will be starting an epic journey from Lands End to John O'Groats. The following 9 days we will cover 966 miles, averaging just over 108 miles per day across barren moorlands and majestic highlands to lush green valleys, winding back lanes and stunning coastal roads. The ride finishes on 13th September at John O'Groats.

We are undertaking this challenge to support SACHD (Scottish Association for Children with Heart Disorders) and in memory of my daughter Anna Elise Hendry who was born in April 2013 with a rare congenital heart disorder called 'Tetralogy of Fallot'. Anna had open heart surgery at 12 weeks old and thereafter continued to thrive. At the age of 13 months Anna was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow for a complete repair.

Despite the positive outlook there were complications and Anna spent the next 16 days on a life support machine, enduring over 40 hours of open heart surgery as the surgeons tried in vain to save her. Heartbreakingly, that wasn't enough and time ran out for Anna and she passed away in our arms. She had a happy and contented life, but one that was far too short.

During the period that Anna was unwell SACHD offered our family a huge amount of support and I am keen to give something back. I would also like to thank my employer, Aker Solutions, who not only provided understanding at a really difficult time but are also supporting me by allowing me time to undertake this epic challenge.
